nnySustainable CHI Members
I want to put out a request for introductions & short research interest blurbs. We now have 120 members, and one of the primary goals of creating this list was to help us build a community around the practice and research of sustainable interaction design. -- Jen Mankoff
In your bio blurb, mention:
- One project you have done or want to do that's relevant to sustainable interaction
- Project URL if you have it
- Why you joined the list (e.g. motivation, what you hope to get out of the list, etc)
Directions: Edit this page and add a row to the table for yourself. If you'd like to say more than a line or two, create a new page with a short teaser and edit that.
From the editor, right-click on the table and choose Row, Insert Row.
Note: To protect your email from spammers, split it across two cells.

I'm interested in social computing and using social networks to influence people's behavior for the better. I'd like to meet potential collaborators, share insights, and test out ideas. |

I recently moved to LA/CA and had difficulties keeping up with the somewhat sustainable lifestyle I was used to in Europe - I am excited to 'think and do sustainability' again. My research focuses on playful engagement and human computer interaction that facilitates exploration and raises awareness. With a few colleagues in Irvine I am working on a 'green room' project in our new building - we wish to bring topics like organic planting and consideration of nature to the attention of staff, teacher and students. |

My research focuses on human-computer interaction, graphics and autonomous agents. Projects include: an interactive museum exhibit to help children learn about restoration ecology, a mobile phone accessible community-generated database to help people engage in environmentally preferable purchasing, and a collaboration with Bonnie Nardi to track pieces of e-waste and visualize their paths using google maps. |

I’m interested in social computing, public authoring, and cross-media interaction in support of ecomuseums, i.e., a reflective and dynamic way in which communities preserve, interpret, and manage their natural and cultural heritage for a sustainable development. Projects include: a platform for ecomuseums based on collaborative sound mapping, a cartographic semantic for reflective communities, a collaboration with CNM at UC Berkeley on issues of new heritage and one with DesignSynergy21 on issues of metadesign vs. green design. I'd like to meet potential collaborators and share ideas. |

I'm interested in using social networks to influence people's energy use (http://www.cmubi.org/footprints), understanding why people do things that are not energy-efficient, and developing sensors and tools for influencing that using principles of ubiquitous computing. |

One project you have done or want to do that's relevant to sustainable
interaction: I've been working for some time on a collaborative project to
develop a socio-technical pattern language. It is partly devoted to sustainable
development; partly to political fairness, etc. (which is inter-related).
I'm also part of Karen Theisen's board for making CHI more sustainable.

Starting an advisory board to "green" CHI next year. Motivation for joining group: meet other like-minded folks in my industry who are passionate about green issues. It's great to know that there are so many of you out there! |

I have been a UX Designer/Consultant/Manager for 15 years and have always been an environmentalist. I have never managed to bring the 2 things together. I strive to live my life treading lightly with respect to the environment. For years my primary transport was a bicycle and I had a half share in a car. I obsess about making environmental decisions in my day to day life. All of my electricity is supplied by renewals, on the grid, from Good Energy. My kitchen is crafted from 100 year old pine from a churc h roof. My business cards are 100% Post consumer recycled. I started a Pool Bike scheme at work in Cambridge (UK) to let employees cycle to town lunchtime.
The axe I wish to grind is that it is not easy being an environmentalist. I want to walk in a store and have a conversation with people there about the eco impact of what they sell. I want them to stop regarding me as a freakish alien when I ask such questions. Perhaps making such information more accessible would be a good use for the talents of the CHI community.
Finally I don't have a job right now and would love to work in an area combining CHI and sustainability.

I have taken part in the Technology Consulting in the Global Community program. I do not intend to buy a car once I leave college and am trying to find other ways to reduce my impact on the environment. I would love to find other projects I can work on that will make a difference. |

Digital Eskimo/IDWOP Lab UTS |
At Digital Eskimo we are growing into our goal of being a sustainable design agency and constantly learning/evolving what that means for how we run our studio, engage with our clients and create work. Many of our clients are great environmental or social organisations and we are lucky to have many opportunties to make a contribution through our design practice. I am particularly interested in how we can increase this aspect of our work in the interactive systems that we build. Its easier (right now) to talk about environmental print practices than sustainable websites. That said there are many ways (via content, method and design approach) that CHI and sustainbility can be partnered and I hope to both learn and contribute such via this community - thanks.

In all my endevours as a person I try to be as environmentally aware as possible, I want to do that as well as a designer. I've been following this movement in the world of product design and architecture for some time now. How to be green is more tangible for a product designer or architect. As a designer who works with software and web and who belives that product design soon will be synonymous with web and software design, I believe our methodologies can become helpful in building a more green world as well as in helping corporations and individuals become more aware of how to be green and live more green. I would like to be a part of a community that shares ideas on how we can tangibly do that, so I can be an evangelist of it in my daily lives as a human being and as a designer. |

IDWoP UTS (Australia) and Ashesi University (Ghana) |
Hi, I am a PhD Candidate in the Interaction Design and Work Practice Lab (IDWoP) at the University of Technology, Sydney (Australia). From August 2007 I will be a lecturer at Ashesi University College (Ghana), where I will continue to teach HCI, as well as do research exploring ways of applying user centered methods that integrate reflective practices (sustainability, being one of these) in technology design in and for developing world contexts.
I have already found many interesting resources from links provided by members of this group; looking forward to learning more, sharing ideas and meeting potential collaborators. |

I am an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Grinnell College, and an alumna of the UrbanSim project and the VSD research lab at the University of Washington. I am deeply concerned about the ecological impacts of everyday actions; I am especially interested in making ecological impacts visible at the point where decisions are made. I am starting a project that will employ participatory design to get some traction on this problem in the context of a college campus. |
